The Way of St James from Astorga to Ponferrada

The beautiful part arrives, from Astorga the Camino heads towards the mountains. The landscape becomes more open, the air fresher, and the path begins to look towards mythical places such as Rabanal del Camino, Foncebadón and the Cruz de Ferro. It is on this stretch that pilgrims feel that the journey becomes more intimate: less noise, more sky, more silence. And then comes the change: the descent towards El Bierzo. The landscape softens, more vegetation appears and the route leads to beautiful spots such as Molinaseca, with its quiet charm and atmosphere of reward after the effort. Astorga

The Astorga stage is one of those days on the Camino de Santiago that has a double flavour: the feeling that, from here on, the Camino begins to change, and the opportunity to contemplate its heritage: its Roman legacy, its walls, the cathedral and Gaudí's surprising Episcopal Palace.
